Trek Me Nepal offers this unique trip to Everest that combines the best of the best in the region — taking you to Everest Base Camp, staying in Gokyo, and adding the thrill of crossing Cho-La, a high-altitude pass. We begin with a flight to Lukla, the gateway to Everest. We feel the rushing excitement as we land on the little runway, from where we begin the actual trek. The trail is verdant, crossing suspension bridges over rivers and having our first glances of the white mountains far away.

We pass charming Sherpa villages where prayer flags flutter in the gentle breeze. We trek further to pass quaint monasteries with their unique facades, and cross lush forests of rhododendron & pine. Before we realise it, we arrive at Sagarmatha National Park. And as we gradually gain altitude, We come to Namche Bazaar, the busy hub of Khumbu. A day in Namche Bazaar is spent in acclimatisation and exploration of Sherpa Museum, and a challenging hike to the Hotel Everest View, for  panoramic views of Ama Dablam, Everest, and Lhotse.

At higher altitudes the landscape transforms where forests give way to rocky landscapes. The air begins to grow thin, our lungs burning with each step getting heavier. Brief stops will provide some rest, while dramatic views will reward us. Reaching Tengboche Monastery, we pause to rejoice in the spiritual solitude and marvel at the grandeur of it all.

Following the oft-trodden route to Base Camp, we join with other trekkers from around the world. Crossing rocky trails and icy slopes, we pass Khumbu Glacier before finally reaching Everest Base Camp. Surrounded on all sides by giant peaks and prayer flags, we know we have arrived at Base Camp — with the looming view of Khumbu Icefall. A sense of profound accomplishment will sink in rendering all the hardship we tackled earlier meaningless. The summit might be still far away but touching the mountain itself is no less of a feat.

Kalapatthar, another vantage point on our trip, is a must-visit place in this region. We reach there in the darkness — just before dawn — hoping to catch the first rays of sun. As the sun rises we stand frozen in time, our cameras clicking hastily trying to capture our lifetime moments.

The trail gets increasingly demanding before we reach Cho-La Pass, the most challenging portion of the trek. We will trudge along glacial moraines and rocky paths — our muscles wanting to give in while our determination keeps us moving. There will even be a night or two filled with nervous anticipation when we set out before dawn, our headlamps lighting the frosty trails. As we carefully tread over ice and snow, we will eventually reach the pass and enjoy a view that’s beyond description.

We descend to the pristine Gokyo Valley with its unmistakable sight of turquoise lakes. We spend a day in this magnificent solitude climbing the nearby peak of Gokyo-Ri (5,357m). This vantage point provides views of four eight-thousanders viz. Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu.

As we descend to Namche Bazaar and Lukla, we reflect on the physical challenges, the high-altitude trails, the bitter cold and above all the exhaustion. These hardships come to rest as we rejoice in the fresh achievement of doing what we gloriously doubted. The reward of experiencing the raw beauty of Everest comes only after conquering ourselves. And as we leave with reignited minds and hearts full of memories, we will be more than willing to return here some day — for another round of awakening and heeding to the call of Everest.
