Trek Me Nepal has crafted this special journey — more of a sacred journey — to Lake Gosainkunda, in the mountains of Langtang. Located in the beautiful and famed Langtang region, this trek brings adventurers to a place of spirituality in the high-altitude alpine trekking zones of Nepal. The grandeur of this journey is that it will take you through ancient forests, sacred valleys, and time-worn villages north of Kathmandu valley.

Reaching Lake Gosainkunda will take you to a whooping altitude of 4,700 meters, but the trek begins right outside of Kathmandu. The trail, comparable to Nature's beautiful tapestry, will take you through dense rhododendron forests of reds and pinks during spring. Every step that you take through these ancient forests reveals new wonders. The journey feels immersive due to the distant tweets of Himalayan birds, the gentle rustle of pine trees, and probably even sightings of rare wildlife like the red panda.

Deep into the trekking route, you will ascend through Tamang villages. For some cultural experience of Langtang, you will stay beneath the fluttering prayer flags. Cold mountain breeze will sweep at times, and views of traditional stone-houses will make your heart sing. The dotted farms tended by the locals are  predominantly influenced by high-altitude farming practices. Trekkers will certainly feel welcome as they trek ahead, especially because of the eager locals greeting with warm smiles and if you're willing, a steaming cup of butter tea.

As you ascend to higher grounds, the real test of courage begins . Crossing the notable Lauribinayak Pass at 4,165 meters is one such daring step, where thin air will ultimately challenge you — including all seasoned trekkers. You will have to tread one step at a time to overcome this demanding section of the trek. You will be tested of both physical stamina and mental fortitude — and when you do it, your reward will be simply incomparable! Majestic panoramic views of Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Manaslu will be found spread in one single seam — appearing as if it's a heavenly crown capped onto the high-lying protruding areas of Earth. Such grandeur is increasingly becoming rare, mostly because of the changing climate and the thinning ice.

Upon arrival, you will notice that Gosainkunda itself is a sight that stirs the soul. It's said that Lord Shiva created this sacred lake by piercing the mountain with his all-powerful trident. He did so while seeking relief (via this mountain-cold water) after swallowing poison to save the universe. To commemorate this, thousands of pilgrims brave this altitude to take a dip in the holy waters of Gosainkunda during the festival Janai Purnima in August.

While the lake remains frozen from October to June, the trail itself changes with the varying seasons. In spring, you will find blooming rhododendrons and in autumn, crystal-clear views of the mountains will allure you. In summer and winter, trekkers take this trek less due to the heavy monsoon rains and the chilly snow-covered wilderness respectively. Whichever season you choose to take, you will have a deep rich experience of personal discovery. Trekking high passes and picturesque villages, you will gain newer confidence each coming day and each new vista will renew your sense of appreciation for Nature.

This program from Trek Me Nepal demands your stamina and respect for its natural challenges; but it rewards you with courage and with experiences that will remain with you years after the journey ends.

  •   A less-crowded trekking route offering crystal-clear views of Gosaikunda Lake and a memorable Himalayan experience.
  •   Hike to picturesque villages like Syabru, Ghopte Odar, and the vibrant Langtang Village.
  •   Trek through rhododendron, oak, and pine forests, and take a chance at spotting rare wildlife such as the red panda, musk deer, and even the elusive snow leopard.
  •   Visit the holy Gosaikunda Lake and its surroundings; and explore Kyanjin Gompa.
  •   Stunning views of the Langtang range, cross the Gosaikunda Pass, and enjoy the alpine beauty of the region.
  •   Experience high-altitude local culture of Langtang through Tamang and Sherpa communities, while visiting local monasteries.
  •   Explore UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu, followed by a scenic drive to the starting point of the trek.

Kathmandu Valley has the highest concentration of World Heritage Sites, and it's only fitting not to miss them while you're staying in the valley itself. A great beginning to an already exciting itinerary, you can visit plenty of places in this capital city full of heritage. You will visit the Swayambhunath Stupa (aka "Monkey Temple") in the morning. Later on, have a sumptuous lunch at a restaurant in Kathmandu Durbar Square — one of the three mediaeval Durbar Squares inside the Valley. In the afternoon, you'll visit the temple of Pashupatinath, belonging to Lord Shiva, where you can soak in the atmosphere and watch the world go by from a quiet bench above the bank of Bagmati. Later in the afternoon you will circumnavigate the renowned Stupa of Bauddhanath — probably the largest stupa in the world. Feel free to customise a day-trip from a number of choices.

Early in the morning, our representative will come to your hotel to pick you up for the journey ahead. From Kathmandu, a scenic drive to Syabrubesi ensues. Apart from picturesque landscapes, breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks like Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and Langtang will captivate you. Driving through cultivated valleys and mountain villages, you'll reach Syabrubesi. Syabrubesi is a busy town, especially because it's a popular gateway to the Langtang region.

Today marks the beginning of the actual trek. You will begin from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel early, going through dense forests and sparse villages. Crossing the villages of Bamboo and Rimche, you will ascend along Langtang River. This section of the path is full of rhododendron bushes, old moss-clad oaken forests, and bamboo. Trekkers have reported sightings of wildlife such as the langur monkey, musk deer, and Himalayan pheasant. In about four hours, you will reach a hamlet called Lama Hotel where you'll be staying tonight. Nobody knows how this desolate hamlet in the middle of the dense forest came to be called Lama Hotel. There are neither Lamas here, nor is there any hotel. But legends tell of an old monk from long ago who meditated (and "lived" in a nearby cave aka "hotel") — hence colloquially "Lama's Hotel" or "Lama Hotel" being the name of this place. Views of cascading waterfalls and snow-capped peaks is what makes today's trek worthwhile.

After a quick breakfast in Lama Hotel, we will begin the day with a steep ascent through forests of rhododendron. First we will come to the village of Gumanechok where we'll have a brief stop to catch a breather. We will continue the climb to a place called Ghodatabela, named after a horse "stable" that probably used to be here in olden times. If not a proper stable, locals describe of a "motel" where traders used to tie & feed their horses, and spend the night. Along the road, you will have panoramic views of Mt. Langtang Lirung and see several other villages belonging to the Tamang. Suspension bridges, terraced lands, and cascading waterfalls are frequent in this region — opening up as the forest gets thin. Wide views of the Langtang Valley will mesmerize you against the towering Langtang Himal. Despite the challenges of today's steep path, you'll quickly get into bed at the first sight of a teahouse.

The landscape transforms gradually — from thick forests to alpine meadows — and immediately thereafter to alpine rocky terrain. Distant views of snow-capped peaks like Ganesh Himal, Langtang Lirung, and Manaslu will be a  welcome respite. As you gain the first glimpse of the sacred Gosainkunda, you will have an awe-inspiring experience. Nestled in a basin surrounded by several smaller lakes (Saraswatikunda and Bhairabkunda), this holy site is where pilgrims come to take a dip to purge their lifetimes of sins. Revered in mythology, this place is where Lord Shiva himself created this lake using his trident and quenched his thirst. After exploring the place for some time, we will rest tonight in one of the many teahouses.
