The Upper Mustang Trek with Yara (17 Days) by Trek Me Nepal is a unique journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally preserved regions. The trip begins in Kathmandu with a warm welcome and trek briefing, followed by a full day of sightseeing at major UNESCO World Heritage Sites including Swayambhunath Stupa, Kathmandu Durbar Square, Boudhanath Stupa, and Pashupatinath Temple. The journey then continues with a scenic drive to Pokhara along the Prithvi Highway, offering views of rivers, terraced fields, and mountains.

From Pokhara, the route follows the Kali Gandaki Valley through Beni, Tatopani, Marpha, and Jomsom before reaching Kagbeni, the entry point to Upper Mustang. The trek begins here, passing through traditional villages such as Tangbe, Chhusang, and Chele.

The trail gradually climbs across dry, dramatic landscapes, crossing high passes like Taklam La and Dajori La, with wide mountain views. A key highlight is visiting Chungsi Cave, a sacred meditation site linked to Guru Rinpoche, before continuing toward Syangboche.

The journey continues through Ghami and Dhakmar, crossing Nyi La and Ghami La with panoramic views of the Kali Gandaki Gorge. Ghami village features traditional Tibetan-style houses and a long stone mani wall, while Dhakmar is known for its striking red cliffs.

The trail then leads toward Lo Manthang via Mui La and Chogo La, including a visit to the ancient Ghar Gumba monastery. In Lo Manthang, trekkers explore monasteries, the royal palace, and surrounding areas, with the option to witness the Tiji Festival during the right season.

The itinerary becomes more exclusive as it heads toward Yara, passing remote settlements like Dhi and crossing the Kali Gandaki River. This section offers quieter trails and deeper cultural experiences. From Yara, a side trip leads to Luri Gompa, a 700-year-old cave monastery set high on a cliff, known for its ancient murals and spiritual importance. The trek continues through rugged terrain to Tenge and Tetang, with views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and unique rock formations.

The final stage takes you to Muktinath Temple via Gyu La Pass, offering wide views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Muktinath is a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists, known for its 108 water spouts and spiritual atmosphere. Afterward, the journey descends back to Pokhara through the Kali Gandaki Valley and returns to Kathmandu for a farewell dinner and departure.

This trek combines high-altitude desert landscapes, ancient Tibetan culture, sacred monasteries, and remote Himalayan villages. With the added Yara and Luri Gompa route, it offers a less crowded and more authentic experience, making it one of the most distinctive and rewarding treks in Nepal.
