The key to altitude safety is to pace yourself when you’re trekking. Bear in mind that the higher up you trek, the thinner the air is. As such, your trek may start to feel a bit more physically challenging, especially as you go nearer to the monastery. The most important thing to remember is that altitude sickness can hit anyone, regardless of your experience and fitness level.
More experienced trekkers are sometimes lured into a false sense of safety, thinking that their expertise will keep them safe from those worrying symptoms, but this isn’t always the case: altitude sickness is known to affect everyone, rookie and experienced trekkers alike.
To ensure your safety on the Kyanjin Gompa trek, it’s also important to familiarize yourself with the first symptoms of altitude sickness:

As we mentioned, a slow and gradual ascent is the easiest way to lower your risks of altitude sickness. In addition, we strongly urge you to stay properly hydrated while trekking. While some tea houses do serve alcohol, you may wish to stick to non-alcoholic drinks to prevent dehydration.
We can also vouch for the Buckthorn juice that’s served by most tea houses on the trail. Made from natural ingredients, this plant is known to help prevent and alleviate the symptoms of altitude sickness.

Despite the risks of altitude sickness, there’s no denying that Kyanjin Gompa Nepal offers a once-in-a-lifetime adventure with some of the most gorgeous sights in the world. Best of all, the area is surrounded by panoramic views and scenic hikes, perfect if you have some extra time to explore the mountain trails.
In fact, one of the most popular side hikes that trekkers commonly take is the journey from Kyanjin Gompa to Kyanjin Ri. This is because Kyanjin Ri has two major vantage points for enjoying spectacular views of Langtang Lirung and the surrounding mountain ranges. The trek may be on the shorter side but it’s quite steep, so you do need to be in peak physical condition.
Don’t forget that the air up there is even thinner, so it’s important to make sure that you’re up for the Kyanjin Gompa to Kyanjin Ri trek, no matter how experienced you are.
The lower Kyanjin Ri viewpoint stands at around 4,300 meters, while the upper one towers at 4,773 meters. If you do manage to make it to the summit, you will be greeted with jaw-dropping views of the spectacular surroundings, including the alpine valleys, the snow-capped peaks, the Kyanjin Gompa glacier, and the mighty Mount Everest herself.
Now if you’re in peak physical condition and have plenty of trekking experience under your belt, we suggest that you hike from Kyanjin Gompa to Tserko Ri, a majestic peak that’s even taller than Kyanjin Ri at nearly 5,000 meters.
The Kyanjin Gompa to Tserko Ri route takes a full day though, so you do want to be prepared. You may wish to depart at sunrise or right before so you can maximize your daylight hours. The route to Tserko Ri’s summit takes you across alpine ridges and pastures where you might spot yaks gazing.
From the top, you will be greeted by awe-inspiring views of Dorje Lakpa, Yala Peak, and Langtang Lirung. On a clear day, you can even see all the way to Shishapangma in Tibet. Talk about an impressive view!

The earthquake triggered an avalanche that completely obliterated Langtang Village. It was so devastating that out of all the houses and buildings in Langtang, only one single house survived.
The village had to be completely rebuilt from scratch, something that took three years as well as both local and international efforts. We recommend that you spend a few days in Langtang Village to learn more about its history and the resilience displayed by the villagers in the face of such impossible odds. It’s also a great place for familiarizing yourself with the Tamang culture.
Owing to its elevation, Langtang Village can also double as a great rest stop to help you acclimatize. The village is actually the last settlement you’ll encounter before trekking to Kyanjin Gompa, which is the next major spot on the route.

For most trekkers, Lama Hotel stands as the first major rest stop along the way.
After leaving the hotel, the route starts to ascend as you make your way to Langtang Village which is located at nearly 3,500 meters above sea level. This is where you might start to feel the effects of the thinning air.
After Langtang Village, you can start making your way up to Kyanjin Gompa. The trek map also features all the exciting side treks and expeditions that you can take from Kyanjin Gompa.

Here’s the most important thing to know when planning your adventure: the weather forecast in Kyanjin Gompa tends to change pretty significantly throughout the year.
It is super important for you to understand the Kyanjin Gompa temperature range and seasonal climate before planning your trek to ensure your complete safety on the trails.
As such, we recommend that you continuously check the Kyanjin Gompa weather forecast during your trek to keep ahead of any warnings or poor visibility. Because of its elevation, Kyanjin Gompa sees drastic weather changes, including colder temperatures, even in the summer.

Winter (December to February): Daytime temperatures normally range from 0 to 5 degrees C although it can get significantly colder at night as the thermometer plunges down to -14, if not lower.
However, the cold usually comes with crisp, unblemished views of those majestic Himalayan peaks. The trails are virtually empty, so you’ve got the entire snowy landscape to yourself.
Fall (September to November): As the shoulder season in Langtang, autumn is one of the best months to trek to Kyanjin Gompa. The Kyanjin Gompa temperature is a comfortable 8 to 14 degrees C during the day – although nighttime can be significantly colder. This is said to be one of the best times to hike in Nepal.
Summer (June to August): The summer temperatures are pretty stable in summer (10 to 18 degrees C during the day and 5 to 8 degrees C at night). That being said, we strongly urge you to stay away from the trails in the summer because this season usually comes with the heavy monsoon rains.
As such, the paths are often slippery and your visibility will be compromised. While some experienced trekkers do venture out in the summer, we do need to point out that it’s one of the most dangerous times to trek to Kyanjin Gompa Nepal.
Spring (March to May): Like fall, spring is peak trekking season in Langtang, mostly because of the more-than-ideal trekking conditions. During the day, you can expect temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees C. Nightime can be colder though, with the thermometer hovering around -5 degrees C.
The risk of rainfall is pretty low. The landscape is quite majestic in spring, with the rhododendrons blooming bright red and pink. The alpine meadows are also blanketed in colorful wildflowers.

Spring and autumn are said to be the best time to visit Kyanjin Gompa because of the amazing visibility, trail safety, and trekking conditions. The Kyanjin Gompa weather forecast usually predicts low precipitation during that time so the risks of slippery slopes are low.
Now, these can be the best trekking seasons in Langtang, but it’s still important to note that spring and autumn are also the busiest times.
As such, the tea houses and lodges are often jam-packed and it’s near impossible to land a last-minute room. If you’re going do the Langtang Circuit trek then, we would urge you to make all your bookings ahead of time.

Langtang village before and after the devastating 2015 Kyanjin Gompa earthquake were two drastically different places. Prior to the disaster, the village was a quaint, charming place where the Tamang community mainly earned their living from the land. Tourism was another thriving industry, owing to the tourists who would embark on the Langtang trek Kyanjin Gompa.
On the eve of the earthquake, the entire community was celebrating one of the most important festivals in Langtang. And then, the next day, life as they knew would change forever. The earthquake and avalanche completely smothered the village, destroying everything in its path.
While Kyanjin Gompa was also affected by the earthquake although the damage up there wasn’t as extensive as it was down in the village. As such, many people set up temporary shelters in Kyanjin Gompa while they waited for the disaster recovery team to show up.
In the midst of the disaster, the villager’s local resilience shone through as they showed unwavering strength of spirit. Eventually, thanks to the arduous rebuilding efforts, local and international rescuers were able to rebuild the village, displaying the kind of strength and determination that left the entire world watching in awe.
By 2017, the Langtang trek Kyanjin Gompa was reopened.
As part of the safety initiatives, the new Langtang Village was rebuilt 100 meters away from the original site since the experts discovered that the former location was right where the avalanche funneled down the mountain.
In addition to a safer location, the villagers also reworked the tea houses and guest houses to provide better lodging as well as upgraded facilities. As such, the new buildings were made from steel and concrete with earthquake-resistant features. The upgraded facilities were also focused on comfort.
